The Smono 4 (USB-C) is the long-battery-life model in Smono's range, a German brand based in Aachen. It is consistently well rated in its price class, and it suits people who want one dependable vape for everyday use.

The current USB-C version upgraded the original with a bigger battery, an OLED display and a ceramic vapour path. Heating is hybrid and leans on conduction, so you feel more resistance when you inhale than on a pure convection vaporizer. Opening the airflow control on the base reduces that resistance, which suits slow sessions outdoors, on a terrace or on a long walk.

The Smono 4 stands about 12 cm tall, 5.5 cm wide and 2.6 cm thick, and weighs 150 g. The housing has a soft rubberised finish and a flask shape that fits well in one hand, and the OLED display is angled towards you, so you can read it without turning the vape around.

The mouthpiece is laboratory-grade glass with a stainless collar and twists off the top. Glass keeps the taste clean and takes a little heat out of the vapour on the way through. No carry case comes in the box, so the glass is worth packing with some care.

The Smono 4 uses hybrid heating that leans on conduction. The chamber walls warm the herbs by direct contact, and the perforated floor lets air travel up through the load, the way warm air rises through a heating grille.

The vape is ready in about 30 seconds, roughly the time it takes to grind a load. A vibration tells you when the set temperature is reached, and further vibrations mark the start and end of the session.

The vapour path is ceramic and fully insulated, so vapour never touches the electronics. That keeps the taste clean, with none of the metallic or plastic notes that some cheaper vaporizers add.

An airflow control on the base sets how much resistance you feel. When the control is fully open, air flows freely and inhaling is easy; when you close it, you feel more resistance and inhale more slowly.

Adjustable airflow is uncommon at this price. Set it before the session starts, because the difference between fully open and fully closed is large.

The OLED shows set and live temperature together, so you can watch the temperature rise to the value you set. Use the + and - buttons to set any value between 160°C and 220°C, and the display switches between °C and °F.

Around 180°C is a good starting point and preserves lighter compounds and terpenes. Moving up towards 200°C to 210°C extracts more from the load in fewer draws.

At the top of the range the vapour runs warm. Opening the airflow cools the draw if it starts to feel hot in the throat.

You set the session length yourself, anywhere from 3 to 7 minutes. Hold the power button for about two seconds, then use the temperature buttons to pick your time.

When the time is up, the vape vibrates and the heater shuts off on its own. Five minutes suits most sessions, 3 minutes covers a quick solo one, and 7 minutes works when you are sharing.

The chamber holds about 0.3 g of ground herbs, a realistic load for one or two people. Grind medium-fine and fill firmly without packing it tight, so air can still travel up through the load.

The Smono 4 takes dry herbs only. One stir mid-session helps, because heating that relies mainly on conduction works from the outside of the load inwards.

The box includes two cleaning brushes and one mouthpiece filter, and no loading tool. You can add a stirring tool to load, level and stir the chamber, and a pocket scale for repeatable 0.3 g fills. Both are sold separately.

The controls are three buttons on the side: one oval power button and two round buttons for temperature.

1. Loading: Twist the glass mouthpiece off the top, fill the chamber with about 0.3 g of medium-fine ground herbs, then refit the mouthpiece.
2. Powering on: Press the power button five times in quick succession. The display lights up and the heater starts.
3. Setting temperature: Use the + and - buttons to pick a target between 160°C and 220°C.
4. Setting the timer: Hold power for about two seconds, then choose 3 to 7 minutes with the temperature buttons.
5. Setting airflow: Adjust the control on the base: open for easy inhaling, closed for more resistance.
6. Inhaling: After about 30 seconds the vape vibrates. Draw slowly, 5 to 8 seconds at a time.
7. Increasing the temperature: Stir the load once mid-session and raise the temperature by 10°C to 20°C when the flavour becomes weaker.
8. Finishing: At the end of your set time the heater switches off and the vape vibrates. Press the power button five times to stop the session early.
9. Emptying: Brush the used herbs out while the chamber is still warm. Five presses while the vape is on engage the safety lock for pocket carry.

The 3000 mAh cell is among the largest in the budget portable class and gives you several sessions per charge. If you use it heavily all day, you will still need to recharge it before the evening.

Charging over USB-C takes under two hours from empty, so you can plug it in overnight like a phone. The port sits on the base, so the vape rests on its side while it charges. The battery is sealed inside and is not user-replaceable.

The kit comes with a braided USB-C cable and no wall plug. You can add a fast charger as an optional wall adapter for home or travel.

Plan a quick clean every 5 to 10 sessions, or roughly every week or two depending on how heavily you use it. Brushing the chamber out while it is still warm takes under a minute, and the box supplies separate brushes for the chamber and the air path.

The mouthpiece comes apart into a ceramic filter and a mesh screen in a silicone holder. Wash those parts on their own and let them dry fully before refitting. Screens wear out before any other part. You will notice two signs: the draw becomes harder and the flavour gets weaker.
