Who is the XMax Starry V4 for?
The XMax Starry V4 is the simplest model in the XMax range: you fill the chamber and inhale. As the conduction counterpart to the brand's convection models, it is consistently rated among the best budget portables, and you do not need any special breathing technique to use it.
The Starry V4 is a session vaporizer, so flavour is strongest in the first draws and softens as the load is gradually used up. It also works best at mid to high temperatures, since extraction stays light below about 170°C. Set it around 190°C, sip slowly, and it becomes the pocket vaporizer you take camping or hand around a small group without a second thought.
Slim Metal Body Built for Pockets
The Starry V4 measures 11.6 cm tall and 3.8 cm wide, with an anodised aluminium body and a matte finish. At 137 g it has a solid weight in the hand, and most of that weight is the 18650 cell inside. It stays slim enough to hide in a jacket or a bag.
A magnetic zirconia mouthpiece sits on top and pulls off with one finger for loading and stirring. Zirconia is inert, hard-wearing and does not take on much heat, and the straw shape keeps your lips clear of the metal body.
The OLED screen shows the set temperature, the live temperature, the battery level and the session countdown. A quick hold of both arrow buttons flips the screen 180°, so the numbers read the right way up in either hand.
Over long or high-temperature sessions the body and the mouthpiece tip can warm up. The two silicone mouthpiece caps in the box cover the tip for that reason, and they also make the vape easy to pass around a group hygienically.
Ceramic Heating That Needs No Effort From You
The Starry V4 uses conduction. Its heating element sits inside the wall of the ceramic chamber, so warmth passes into the herbs from every side, much like a sun-warmed stone passing heat into whatever rests against it.
A stainless mesh screen at the base of the chamber leaves an air gap under the load, which helps the heat spread evenly through the pack. Emptied loads come out an even brown with no scorching.
The vape heats in about 25 to 35 seconds from cold and vibrates when it reaches the set temperature. Waiting roughly another minute at temperature lets the ceramic and the herbs heat through fully, and the vapour gets noticeably denser from that point on.
Airflow You Control
A mechanical slider on the front of the body sets how much air passes through the chamber, and it moves smoothly from fully closed to fully open. The resistance is deliberate, so the slider stays where you set it in a pocket.
With the slider closed, the draw is tight: you pull the vapour into your mouth first and the flavour is concentrated. With it open, the draw is easier and cooler, and that is the setting for water pipe use. Even wide open, the Starry V4 gives a gentle sip, so slow draws of around 10 seconds suit it best.
A slider you can move mid-session is rarely found on pocket vaporizers at this price. You can start closed for flavour and open it up later without stopping the session.
Temperature Control to the Single Degree
The Starry V4 covers 100°C to 240°C in single-degree steps across the full range. The up and down buttons move one degree per press, and holding one scrolls quickly. A °F to °C toggle and temperature memory are both built in.
Around 180°C to 195°C makes a sensible starting point. Lower settings preserve lighter compounds and give a gentler session, while 200°C to 215°C extracts more material from each load. Many people step the temperature up through a session, starting low for flavour and finishing higher.
Three session timers of 4, 6 or 10 minutes are set by holding power and up together, and the vape shuts off on its own when the timer runs out. You can switch to a longer timer part way through if a session is about to end.
A Chamber That Takes a Full Load
The ceramic chamber holds roughly 0.2 g to 0.3 g of ground herbs, from 0.175 g if you fill it level with the rim up to about a third of a gram if you tamp the herbs down. The opening is a wide oval, so ground material drops straight in with the included packing tool.
Grind slightly finer than usual and tamp the load lightly, because conduction heating only works where the herbs touch the ceramic. Keep the load level with the rim. Just avoid packing it so tightly that the airflow is blocked.
One stainless steel dosing capsule comes in the box. A filled capsule drops into the chamber like a small cup, keeps resin off the ceramic and holds around 0.13 g, which makes it a neat way to run smaller sessions. The capsule adds a layer between the heat and the herbs, so draws are a little softer than a direct load.
The Starry V4 is a dry herb vaporizer as it comes. You can add dosing capsules in a 5-pack to prepare several sessions at home, a TightVac MiniVac to store ground herbs airtight, and a wax cup if you want an occasional path for concentrates. All three are sold separately.
How to Use the XMax Starry V4
Three buttons and the screen handle everything, and there is no app or pairing to worry about.
- Loading: Pull off the magnetic mouthpiece, fill the chamber level with the rim, and tamp lightly. A pre-filled dosing capsule drops in the same way.
- Powering on: Triple-click the power button. The vape vibrates to confirm and the screen wakes.
- Setting up: Use the up and down buttons to set the temperature to the degree. Hold power and up for two seconds to pick a 4, 6 or 10 minute timer.
- Heating: Wait for the vibration, then give it about another minute so the chamber heats through.
- Setting airflow: Move the front slider closed for tighter, more flavourful sips, or open for an easier draw and for water pipe use.
- Inhaling: Draw slowly for around 10 seconds. Hard, fast pulls cool the chamber down and produce less vapour.
- Stirring: Lift the mouthpiece part way through and stir the load with the poker tool so it heats more evenly.
- Finishing: The timer shuts the vape off and it vibrates once more. Let it cool, then tip the used herbs out and brush the chamber.
Battery and Charging: Why a Spare Cell Helps
The Starry V4 runs on a single 2550 mAh 18650 cell that lives behind a cap in the base. In measured use it gives eight ten-minute sessions at 198°C, and a charged spare swaps in within seconds, so an empty cell only interrupts one session instead of stopping you for the rest of the day.
Charging happens over USB-C and takes around six hours from empty. The vape is designed to be charged between sessions, as XMax advise against vaping while it is plugged in. No wall plug comes in the box, and any wall charger you use with it must be rated 5 V / 1 A at most.
Two add-ons complete the routine and are sold separately. The Eve 35V - 3500 mAh 18650 Battery gives you a second cell to carry with more capacity than the one in the kit, and the Xtar X2 - Battery Charger tops up two cells outside the vape, which is quicker than internal charging and saves wear on the USB-C port.
Cleaning Takes About Five Minutes
Warm the vaporizer slightly first, because residue lifts far more easily when it is warm. Brush the ceramic chamber with the included brush, wipe the cup and the top edges with a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol, and clear the base screen with the poker tool.
The mouthpiece assembly comes apart into five pieces for a deeper clean. Those pieces take a ten minute soak in alcohol, then a rinse in water and a full dry before you put them back together. The area above the chamber collects resin quickest, so it is worth a soak every week or two.
The box includes a brush, a packing tool, a cleaning tool, two spare screens, two mouthpiece o-rings, cotton swabs and alcohol pads. When those run down, the maintenance kit restocks the cleaning supplies and screens in one go, and it is available as an add-on.
Starry V4 vs V4 Pro
The XMax V4 Pro is the same brand's step-up pocket vaporizer, built around convection heating with an on-demand mode. Convection gives it cleaner flavour deeper into a load, it takes a glass water pipe adapter, and it can be used while plugged in.
The Starry V4 has two advantages of its own: a bigger chamber and a higher maximum temperature. Its ceramic oven takes up to about a third of a gram tamped, more than the V4 Pro family holds, and the temperature range runs to 240°C where the V4 Pro stops at 220°C. Three session timers of 4, 6 or 10 minutes let you match the session to the load, and the two silicone mouthpiece caps make it the easier one to pass around a group.
If you want a session vape that works the same for everyone who picks it up, with no breath technique to explain, the Starry V4 is the easier one to use day to day.
Starry V4 vs FX Mini Ultra
The Wolkenkraft FX Mini Ultra is a compact convection portable that stands out for its build quality and its warranty support. Convection heating holds flavour better through a load, and the 5-year warranty is well beyond the Starry's one year.
The Starry V4's main advantage is a battery you can replace yourself. A charged 18650 in your pocket keeps sessions running when the first cell is empty, and the cell itself is replaced cheaply when it eventually wears out. Single-degree control across 100°C to 240°C, three session timers and the airflow slider all sit on the vape with no app involved.
For festivals, camping trips and days away from a socket, the swappable cell and the adjustable draw make the Starry V4 the more practical pocket companion.
Recommended Accessories
Right now we offer a 25% discount on all accessories when you buy any vaporizer here at MagicVaporizers. Here is a guide to what pairs well with the Starry V4.
Xtar X2 - Battery Charger: Charges two cells at once outside the vape, which is faster than the six hour internal charge and saves the USB-C port.
Eve 35V - 3500 mAh 18650 Battery: A second cell with more capacity than the stock one, so when a battery runs flat you simply swap it and carry on with your day.
Dosing Capsules (5-pack): Fill five at home and carry a day of sessions with no grinder or packing tool needed.
TightVac MiniVac: An airtight pocket container that seals herbs and odour in, and you can carry filled dosing capsules inside it without any smell escaping until you need them.
TightVac Debowler: Tap the chamber out cleanly after each session and collect the used herb in one place.
Those two plus the capsule pack cover the full routine: fill your capsules at home, carry them sealed, and tap the chamber out clean afterwards.
Glass Bubbler: Water filtration is the fix for hot vapour at the top of the temperature range, and it is the upgrade that changes the session most.
Water Pipe Adapter with Bubbler: Connects the Starry to a water pipe and brings its own water filtration along.
Water Pipe Adapter: The simple silicone connection for anyone who already owns a bong or bubbler.
Glass Mouthpiece: An all-glass draw path, inert and easy to clean in an alcohol soak.
Wax Cup: Opens up occasional concentrate loads in a vaporizer that ships set up for dry herbs only. If concentrates are a regular part of your routine, a dedicated device like the Puffco Pivot will serve you far better than any insert.
Silicone Cover: Adds grip and protection for travel, and gives you something cooler to hold on longer sessions.
MV StashBox + 8 Accessories: A lockable canvas bag that keeps the vape, spare cells, filled capsules and herbs together, with a full-size grinder included.
Maintenance Kit: Restocks screens, brushes and cleaning tools, since regular cleaning is what keeps a pocket vaporizer working well.
Warranty Information
The XMax Starry V4 comes with a 1-year warranty on the vaporizer and a 6-month warranty on the battery. All XMax Starry V4 vaporizers we sell are authentic XMax products.
